Rental Vouchers

The Corpus Christi Housing Authority (CCHA) administers the rental vouchers. The housing authority receives federal funds from HUD to administer the Housing Choice Voucher program. A family is issued a rental voucher and is responsible for finding and selecting a suitable rental unit of its choice, which may include their present unit. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the CCHA. A rental subsidy is paid directly by the CCHA to the landlord on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount amount by the program.

Eligibility for a rental voucher is determined by the CCHA based on the total annual gross income and family size and is limited to U.S. citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status. In general, the family's income may not exceed 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area in which the family chooses to live. Median income levels are published by HUD and vary by location.

During the application process, the CCHA will collect information on family income, assets, family composition and criminal history checks. The CCHA will verify the information with other local agencies and will use the information to determine program eligibility and the amount of the rental assistance payment. If the CCHA determines that the family is eligible, it will put their name on a waiting list. Once the family's name is reached on the waiting list, the CCHA will contact the family and issue to the family a rental voucher.
